Bed Bug Epidemic: An old plague is resurfacing. You should be worried.

January 1st, 2010 | HD programming, Satellite Television | No Comments »

Have ever given any thought to the popular nighttime sentiment “Sweet dreams, sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite”? This phrase is actually thought to have come from colonial times when matresses were laid on ropes and pests were a big problem.
Bed Bugs have been an issue for centuries even in the United States up until the poison DDT was introduced in the 1950s. The use of DDT as a pesticide was banned in the 1970’s and these mighty little bed bugs welcomed the news.
The absence of DDT along with advancing technology causing increased world travel has allowed Bed Bugs to thrive. In the past few years the number of bed bug infestations has been very similar with what was known previous to the mid century mark and it continues to rise.
Bed bug infestations have been so relevant that even famous actors and actress are not immune to the problem. In 2006 Saturday Night Live star Maya Rudolph and her husband movie director Paul Anderson were chewed upon by bed bugs in their $13,500-a-month SoHo luxury condo.
Also in 2006, Bed bugs made a cameo appearance on the popular series The King of Queens episode “Buggie Nights” and the Dateline NBC special “Bedbugs Bite”. Currently there are shows on the Discovery and TLC channels which show the daily life of an exterminator and many of the episodes are filled with bed bug drama.
Bed bugs are very difficult to get rid of to learn more about them check out the programs mentioned above on Dish Network or do a little research online. If you are stuck with Dial-up research faster with Wild Blue Satellite Internet.

Could Internet users have prevented the Detroit terrorist plot?

December 31st, 2009 | Satellite Internet Service | No Comments »

Now more than ever more and more people are turning to High Speed Internet service to find out the latest news, and with the facts coming out about the attempted Christmas day bombing of an airline flight heading from Amsterdam to Detroit that failed due to the explosives not being set up the right way. It seems that all of it could’ve been avoided had someone answered one of his many questions he posted online.

The 23 year old Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab who went by the online name of “Farouk1986”starting posting message online in early 2005 about how he was having a hard time making friends, and fitting in at his boarding school. He also sought out guidance to help him with his Muslim beliefs but most of his messages went unanswered. Each message he posted seemed to show the decline in a person who friends in school say was one of the nicest and caring people in the world.

When the news broke that Umar was the suspect in the attempted terrorist attack many people and friends were all shocked except for his parents. Over the last couple of years Umar’s father Umaru felt his sons growing radical beliefs might lead to trouble, so he went into the U.S embassy in Nigeria to report his son. At the time a file was created but not much else was done after the terrorism center in Washington D.C decided that the information was not worth pursuing.

It makes you wonder how many times this whole thing could’ve been stopped ahead of time. Obviously Umar was looking for help, and ended up finding it in the wrong place. His father warned officials that his son was probably going to harm innocent people but nobody really listened. If someone had taken time and replied to one of his many messages I wonder if it would have changed the outcome of a young man who came from a very privileged family but was led down the wrong path that almost cost hundreds of innocent people their life’s.

NFC East playoff race for the 2nd seed

December 30th, 2009 | HD programming, Satellite Television, Sports Programming | No Comments »

After last nights Monday night thrilling game that featured the woeful Chicago Bears rallying behind quarterback Jay Cutler, who leads the league with 26 interceptions to beat the Minnesota Vikings despite Brett Favres historic comeback. Now four of the six NFC teams that qualified for the playoffs has a chance this weekend for a first round bye creating chaos as we head into the final week of the regular season. The only team that already is eliminated from qualifying from a first round bye that made the playoffs in the NFC is the Green Bay Packers.

New Orleans Saints – With Minnesota falling to Chicago last night, the Saints are the only team in the NFC that knows for sure they have a first round bye in the playoffs. They will also have home field advantage throughout the playoffs as the number one seed.

Teams Looking for a first round bye
Philadelphia Eagles – They pretty much control their own destiny. With a win against the Dallas Cowboys this Sunday they are guaranteed the 2nd seed and a first round bye in the playoffs. Or if they tie with Dallas and Minnesota loses or ties they still get the second seed. Along with the first round bye a win over the Cowboys will give the Eagles 1st place in the NFC East division.

Minnesota Vikings – Even though they tried their best to comeback against a struggling Bears team last night the lost put the Vikings currently in third place behind the Eagles and Saints. However if the Vikings can win this weekend against the NY Giants then they still have a shot at a first round bye. But they will need the Eagles to lose or tie Dallas.

Dallas Cowboys – The cowboys have been playing really good football lately after it seemed for a while that their season looked to be over. Now in the last week of the regular season they find themselves against a streaking Eagles team that have won six games in a row and features one of the most explosive offenses in the league. But going into this weekend’s game the Cowboys will be playing at home, and if they can pull off the win they will take1st place in the NFC East division and a shot at a first round bye. With a win they will need the Vikings and the Arizona Cardinals to lose in order to have a first round bye.

Arizona Cardinals – Arizona seems to be the forgotten team in the NFC this year even though they just beat Minnesota two weeks ago and went to the Super Bowl last year and almost pulled off the victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Cardinals are probably the most underrated team heading into the playoffs and with a win over the Packers at home this weekend they could be on their way to a first round bye. Along with a victory over the Packers the Cardinals would need the Vikings and the Eagles to lose in order to secure a first round bye.

This weekend promises to be one of the craziest weekends in the History of the NFC as four teams battle it out for the second seed in the NFC. Usually in the last week of the regular season teams rest their starters to avoid injuries heading into the playoffs, but not this year with so much on the line starters will be playing until the end of the 4th quarter.

Celebrity News! 12/28/09

December 29th, 2009 | HD programming, Satellite Television | No Comments »

Hope you had a great holiday weekend! Check out E! Entertainment Television with Dish Network satellite TV for more up to the minute celebrity news.  Here’s the scoop of the day…

Charlie Sheen
Tiger Woods isn’t the only man making headlines for mistreating his woman. Charlie Sheen evidently spent most of his Christmas day in jail for second-degree assault due to at least attempting to attack his third wife Brooke Mueller with a knife. The couple was spending Christmas in Aspen with their two sons Max and Bob. You would think that after “accidentally” shooting Kelly Preston in the arm during their short-lived engagement and Denise Richards hauling out of their marriage while pregnant with their daughter due to his substance abuse and domestic violence that this woman would know to stay away from this psycho. Sheen is out on $8,500 bond since his wife didn’t press charges and there is a restraining order against him until the hearing on February 8, 2010 when prosecutors will decide whether or not to charge him. Sheen will undergo therapy for anger management.

Creepy Threat or Another Publicity Stunt?
Jon Gosselin’s New York apartment was ripped to shreds over the weekend and a threatening note, also reading that he is a cheater, was left stuck to the dresser with a butcher knife. Perhaps there was a Ginsu sale because knives seem to be very popular this holiday season. Everything throughout the apartment was sliced including the curtains and rugs. His Nintendo Wii game was missing as well as pots and pans and a few other household goods. A Ming vase dating at least 100 years old was smashed to smithereens- that had to hurt! Jon’s ex, Hailey Glassman was questioned because the note was signed with her name, though the true culprit remains a mystery. We know how much Jon loves the limelight and how “tough” it is to find a real job. Could he be so desperate for media attention that he did this himself? I certainly hope not at least for the sake of his children but if so, this guy needs some serious help.

Mark Wahlberg
Marky Mark’s not too excited about his new neighbors who just moved in near his home in Beverly Hills. Once David and Victoria Beckham settled in, the paparazzi has been swarming the street hoping to catch a glimpse of the stars or anyone connected to them. Wahlberg is not very enthusiastic about Beckham’s goal to beef up the game of soccer in the U.S. According to Hollywood.com, he said, “I’m not telling Beckham to take his family home. I’m just not sure why he came to America in the first place. Man, we don’t want your soccer. There’s no way Americans are going to buy the idea of 90 minutes of running around without much happening. Thanks for trying guys, but we’ll stick to baseball and basketball”. Ouch!

JFK
I bet you didn’t guess that you’d be hearing about this late president in your entertainment news. Evidently TMZ has discovered a photograph of JFK during the time he was running for president. He was taking a suntan on a boat while two nude women were jumping overboard for a swim. Two more nude women were tanning on the top level of the boat. Rumor has it that Ted Kennedy was also onboard the boat with the bevy of beauties. TMZ pointed out the fact that this photo could have caused major problems for JFK during his run for election and its discovery at that time could have changed history. The saddest part about this photo is the fact that it is said to have been taken the same day that Jackie Kennedy was taken for a ride to the hospital for an emergency C-Section and gave birth to their still-born child. Professionals tested the photo’s validity and claim that it is indeed authentic.

Bobby
It seems Robert DeNiro has a much closer relationship to his five children than he does in the film Everybody’s Fine. According to Hollywood.com, DeNiro feels that what he says does have an impression on his children, even as teenagers. He said, “But that’s the time when it’s most important to find a way to talk to them - not to lecture them, but to tell them things I think are important for them to know. And the thing to remember is that, even when they look like they’re not listening to you, they are. You have to accept that, at this point in their lives, you’re not going to get much of a reaction from them. But what you say is making an impression.”

Tyra Banks
Tyra is moving on to bigger and better things. She will be ending her talk show The Tyra Show in the spring of 2010 and opening up her own production company called Bankable Studios in New York. She seems to be following in Oprah’s footsteps- not a bad idea. She is determined to reach out to today’s women and told the press that the studio will be creating its share of movies! This sounds interesting and I’m excited to see what she has in store for us!

Celebrity News!

Check out MTV, VH1, E! Entertainment Television and more with Dish Network for the latest celebrity news!

Ryan Kwanten
The hit TV show True Blood has made quite a star of Ryan Kwanten. Michael Ball, the creator of the popular TV series is proud of Kwanten’s performance on the show. Evidently Kwanten is a little brighter than his TV character. Ball said, “Ryan is smart and talented and skilled and he makes it (Jason) look effortless, but he’s really nothing like Jason in real life.” He also claimed that he admires Kwanten for putting himself out there and not being afraid to look “foolish”.

Kate Hudson
Hollywood.com reported that Kate Hudson is looking forward to visiting her family at her hometown in Colorado for Christmas. She said that she finds it interesting to see who will have the first argument and what type of bickering entertainment there will be this year at the dinner table. I’m sure we many of us can relate to that!

Brittany Murphy
The toxicology results from Brittany’s autopsy will be released next week. Her husband told the press that her death could not have been the result of drug abuse or an eating disorder and is baffled as to how she could have died of cardiac arrest at 32-years-old. Some believe that she could have died from accidentally taking a deadly combination of prescription drugs including any combination of what was available in her home at the time. The drugs that were found at her residence included painkillers, anti-depressants, hypertension medication, bipolar medication for diabetes, an anti-inflammatory drug and an antibiotic. If this is the case, it should be a lesson to everyone to try to avoid prescriptions by staying as healthy as possible and to consult your doctor before mixing any type of prescription medications. According to TMZ, the coroner’s notes read, “A check of the nightstands revealed large amounts of prescription medication in the decedent’s name… Also noted were numerous empty prescription medication bottles in the decedent’s husband’s name, the decedent’s mother’s name and unidentified third party names”. It would be so sad to find out that Brittany was receiving the drugs that killed her from L.A. doctors who prescribed them in names other than her own. We’ve seen deaths as the result of these Hollywood drug dealers in the cases of Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger and more celebrities.
Brittany starred in the film Deadline that is slated for release to DVD and depicts her lifeless body hanging out of a bathtub. Redbox is changing the movie covers and posters for the film out of respect and it will take between 7-10 days to remove them completely.

Steven Tyler
On a similar note, Tyler, the lead singer of Aerosmith has admitted himself into a rehab program for pain management and to rid of his addiction to painkillers. His daughter Liv Tyler told People, “My family and I are in complete support of my dad’s decision to seek treatment. He is a courageous man. We love him and are so proud that he is getting help to balance his pain management, not just for himself but for his family, friends and fans.” Steven Tyler has been battling pain for years due to injuries he acquired during his performances. Good choice Steven!

Balloon Family
The Heene’s were sentenced today for their little publicity stunt and will see a little jail time for making all of the emergency officials waste their time the day they thought they were attempting to rescue a six-year-old boy from a flying balloon. Richard Heene was sentenced to 90 days in jail and his wife, Mayumi Heene, will begin her 20-day jail sentence once he is released. He will be let out on a work release program and she will be on supervised probation for four years. I’m sorry, but this guy looks absolutely insane. His facial expressions show a sense of forced emotion. This guy fits the bill for a serial killer. I hope he’s not half as mentally ill as he appears. Their poor children! At least they are learning that stunts like this and lying to authorities are both unacceptable. It’s too bad they have to live with the embarrassment of this whole experience.

Charlize Theron
Charlize has helped to collect 10,000 pairs of shoes for children in need in South Africa this holiday season through her Africa Outreach Project along with TOMS Shoes. It’s nice to see an Oscar-winning actress donate her time to such a wonderful cause.

Movies-Inglorious Basterds-The Other Man-Public Enemy

December 22nd, 2009 | HD programming, Satellite Television | No Comments »

There were so many great movies showing over the weekend with Dish Network’s premium channels that it was difficult to choose which movie to watch! I absolutely had to check out Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds so I decided to hit the video store Friday night. Since snow was in our Massachusetts forecast, I assumed that I’d have time to watch this movie as well as one or two more. This is probably the first weekend in six months that I actually put time aside to relax and have some fun at home.

I had a weird feeling that I would enter the video store and see that every copy of the movie would be gone and I was right. I asked the clerk if there were any Inglorious Basterds hiding behind the counter. I figured if I made him laugh somehow he would look deeper for the movie. He said that there should be two copies in the store and we went searching to see if they were misplaced. They were no where to be found so I started poking around to see what other treasures I could find and I ended up renting four movies! Most people would say that renting four movies is ridiculous but you must understand that I have much catching up to do on my entertainment. I grabbed Public Enemies, The Other Man and Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves for my daughter who laughs every time she sees the preview on her copy of Toy Story. I realized I was holding three movies and couldn’t decide on which to rent for myself so I headed to the counter with all three until I noticed something at the corner of my eye. Inglorious Basterds! I must have looked insane when I jumped like a child to grab the DVD off the shelf. I laughed at myself and headed to the counter with the four flicks in hand.

We decided to watch The Other Man Friday night and chose to save the main feature for Saturday night so we’d have something to look forward to. This film stars Liam Neeson, Antonio Banderas and Laura Linney. The title is self-explanatory and I’m sure that you can guess that Antonio Banderas is the “other man”. It received negative reviews, but I’m always up for a challenge. I know now why this film didn’t make a killing. I fell asleep! The last time I fell asleep on a movie, it was because I was sick. The total film probably could’ve been compiled into thirty minutes because it was so uneventful that the wait for something interesting to happen was excruciating! What a waste to include three decent actors in a movie that was almost about nothing. You have the cheating factor that is interesting but it was not enough to make this movie fly. I watched an hour of it and I still plan to see the rest tonight.  I still don’t want to totally give up hope. Liam Neeson is an amazing actor and if you’ve seen his performance in Schindler’s List you’ll know why, but he has taken every movie offer that comes his way. I don’t know how many more sleepers I can handle just to see a movie including Neeson. His other recent film, Taken was one of the worst hostage films I’ve ever seen. What’s going on Liam? Laura Linney can be slightly annoying to watch but she’s a great actress and truly shined in The Truman Show. Antonio Banderas is great no matter what he’s in. He has the skills, the great looks and, of course, the accent. There must have been some reason these actors chose to be in this film so maybe I’ll be proved wrong when I finally watch the rest of it tonight!

I was finally able to watch Inglorious Basterds Saturday night. The suspense and excitement had been building ever since I heard word on the Internet of Tarantino filming this movie. Maybe I built up too much excitement because I wouldn’t say that this is his best film. It was certainly as unique as I would expect from Tarantino and the story was quite interesting. There was a certain level of suspense and anxiety that was great but something about it seemed off. I was getting that feeling that we would encounter a Pulp Fiction style revenge in the end that makes you want to jump out of your chair and say, “Take that!” but something about the ending wasn’t as effective as I expected. I won’t go into detail because I don’t want to ruin it for anyone but it just seems that there could have been a more shocking approach to the grand finale. Those of you who have seen this film may agree that you would have liked to see the “girl that got away” pull a Kill Bill type can of whoop-a** on the bad guys. Maybe it’s just me. Overall, I thought it was a good film but I must say that Tarantino’s best films were his earliest. I hope one day Tarantino makes a movie as good as Pulp Fiction. This is such an original hit that I think he set his bar at the top when this movie hit theaters because it’s almost impossible to make a movie another film as great and as twisted as this. I enjoyed the following movies more than Inglorious Basterds; the obvious Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, From Dusk Till Dawn and Jackie Brown. Kill Bill was fun but Inglorious Basterds was better. Brad Pitt continues to amaze me with his flexibility as an actor. I always thought he was a decent actor especially in Legends of the Fall, then he absolutely blew me away with his part in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and again with his character in Burn After Reading. I thought his role in Inglorious Basterds seemed a little silly and I was afraid he wouldn’t be able to make his character believable but I was mistaken because he surprised me yet again with a great performance! The cast was superb in this film with the exception of Eli Roth. What the heck was that Tarantino? Eli Roth is an awesome director and maybe he has become friends with Tarantino but the guy couldn’t act if his life depended on it. Eli, we love your movies but not your acting. How about another film like Cabin Fever?

I watched Public Enemies last night for the conclusion to my entertaining weekend. I have one question, how can the director not know that the film he has just made contains one hour of boredom and one hour of award-winning entertainment? The first half of this film doesn’t even compare with it’s last half so I’m glad I didn’t fall asleep! If I was fortunate to have made a film and it turned out to be half dull and half fabulous, I would go back and film the whole first part of it the way I did the last to create a blockbuster hit. Overall the movie was fairly entertaining and ladies, if you love Johnny Depp wait till you see him crying over his girlfriend in this film.

Out of the three movies I rented for us, I would have to go with Inglorious Basterds as number one. Part of me feels that it would have been more worth it to spend the twenty dollars I spent at the video store at the theater to see Avatar, another film I can’t wait to see!

Time Warner Customers could be losing FOX programming

December 21st, 2009 | HD programming, Satellite Television | No Comments »

While the deal is still under negotiations, it does not look good for Time Warner cable customers who could be losing all of their Fox programming channels. For months now the two companies have been trying to work out a deal that benefits both companies but so far Time Warner looks like they are willing to disappoint 14 million viewers by losing one of Americas favorite broadcasting channels.

Rupert Murdoch, and Barry Diller founded Fox Broadcasting Company in 1986. Over the years they have brought viewers some of the best shows in TV history. Shows like Married with Children, The Tracy Ullman Show, 21 Jump Street, The Arsenio Hall Show, The Simpsons, Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, NY Undercover, X Files, In Living Color, Ally McBeal, That 70’s Show, Family Guy, 24, The O.C, House, Malcolm in the Middle, and American Idol.

For all the sports fans that have Time Warner as their cable provider, you will be affected also. With the loss of Fox comes no more NFL Sunday games on FOX, NASCAR, MLB games, NCAA Bowl Games such as the ROSE BOWL, and the BCS Championship Game.

It’s hard to belief that Time Warner will risk losing Fox who is only behind CBS as the most watched network in America. For Time Warner customers not only do you lose Fox but you also lose Fox regional sport networks.

You would think that after Time Warner went through this whole fiasco with Walt Disney, which also owns ABC in 2000, they would have learned their lesson. But that didn’t happen, so all the customers who at one time lost all of their favorite Disney and ABC shows through Time Warner will now lose their Fox programming if a deal isn’t reached.

Maybe some day Time Warner will learn that not only are you losing valuable programming when you drop a major network, but you also lose loyal customers as well.

Movies at the Theater, on DVD and on Dish Network This Weekend!

So many great movies were released in theaters last weekend that it was difficult to decide which one to see first! Let’s see if the movies slated for release today can compare to last week’s hits!

Last Week at the Box Office:

#1 The Princess and the Frog
2. The Blind Side
3. Invictus
4. The Twilight Saga: New Moon
5. Disney’s a Christmas Carol

I must say that I’m surprised Invictus made less money than The Blind Side. There’s something about The Blind Side that seems very stereotypical to me and makes the film completely uninteresting, but then again, I could be wrong. The Princess and the Frog did even better than expected raking in over $24 million and breaking a record as the highest grossing animated movie on opening weekend during the month of December. It seems that Twilight fans are watching their favorite flick over and over again with New Moon coming in at fourth place on its third week in. Disney’s A Christmas Carol received mixed reviews with some critics claiming that it’s just more of the same old story, however, the film has grossed $30,051,075 and was number one during its opening weekend.

Here are the films released today 12/18/09:

And now everyone… The moment we’ve all been waiting for… Avatar is here!

Avatar is released today and is expected to reap in a huge profit, at least, that’s what James Cameron is hoping after he just made the most expensive film of all time. The effects should be incredible with Cameron’s new invention that allows him to direct an animated film in real time. He created a new camera that will bring us even closer into the 3-D picture. Cameron has waited years for this and had the story prepared well in advance. He did not make it years ago because he was waiting for new technological developments to come around to present the movie the way he wants it to be seen. The story seems compelling and it seems to target a wide audience. Could this film draw in as many cronies as Star Wars? Time will tell!

Did You Hear About the Morgans? About who? This film is coming out today and in case you haven’t heard of it among the Avatar craze, it’s the romantic comedy starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant. There’s probably a reason if you haven’t heard of it. The film has already received a D+ from critics and it will probably be devoured by the competition. The couple’s marriage is in trouble and they happen to witness a murder. Their relationship begins to grow when they are placed under witness protection and relocated to a suburban town.

There has been a decent amount of chitchat on the Internet about the new film Nine. I’m not quite sure what to make of it just yet because I haven’t seen the trailer. What I can say for sure is that the cast of this musical is fantastic. It stars Penelope Cruz (who was just in a film that opened last week), Daniel Day Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson, Marion Cotillard and Fergie! The story focuses on director Guido Contini who is trying to juggle the many women in his life.

The rest of the movies released today are as follows:

The Young Victoria starring Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend will focus on the relationship between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

Crazy Heart starring Jeff Bridges is about a country music singer and is expected to be quite interesting.

Ricky starring Sergio Lopez and Alexandra Lamy is about a loving couple who give birth to a very unique baby.

A Town Called Panic is an animated adventure about a cowboy, Indian and horse that discover an underwater world.

Rentals…

If you’re renting a movie, I am pleased to inform you that Quentin Tarantino’s film Inglorious Basterds was out on Tuesday! I’m one of the very few Tarantino fans who did not have a chance to check out what looks to be one of his many hits. I’m looking forward to watching it this weekend. I can’t wait!

Here are the rest of the movies that were released to DVD on Tuesday:

Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp.

The Hangover starring Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms.

G-Force, an animated movie including a squad of guinea pigs with the voices of Bill Nighy and Sam Rockwell.

Taking Woodstock, a comedy directed by Ang Lee and starring Imelda Staunton, Emile Hirsch and Henry Goodman.

The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard starring Jeremy Piven and Ving Rhames and James Brolin.

The Girl From Monaco starring Fabrice Luchini and Roschdy Zem.

The Other Man starring Liam Neeson, Antonio Banderas and Laura Linney.
